The Sabbath Was Made for You: Consent to God’s Gift of Rest (Lectio Divina)

Lectio:

A Treat – Thich Nhat Hanh

“From time to time, to remind ourselves to relax and be peaceful, we may wish to set aside some time for a retreat, a day of mindfulness, when we can walk slowly, smile, drink tea with a friend, enjoy being together as if we are the happiest people on Earth. This is not a retreat. It is a treat.”
— Thich Nhat Hanh, Being Peace (Parallax Press, 1987), p. 5

Meditatio:
When Jesus tells the Pharisees, “The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath” (Mark 2:27–28), He is not merely telling them that human need — very different from human want — is more important than the Law. He is also telling them, and us, something very important about the sabbath itself.

Jesus is saying that the sabbath is for us. It is a gift.

The God who loves us, and who knows what we need more than we know what we need ourselves, created the sabbath so that we can rest, recover, and return — from our busy, distracted, and overworked lives — to Him.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened,” He says, “and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

If we are too hungry, thirsty, or unwell to make use of what we are so freely given, that is okay. Jesus is clear that God wants us to eat, to drink, and to be healed, even on the sabbath (Luke 13:15–16). But if what we need is rest, Jesus tells us it is God’s will that we receive it — and receive it abundantly.

The sabbath was made for us, after all. We need only consent to this gift of love.

We can trust, as the Psalmist did, that “He grants sleep to those He loves” (Psalm 127:2). We will then discover that, when we rest, the Lord rests alongside us — that sabbath is not a retreat from life, but a divine treat made for our delight.

Oratio:
I abandon myself
to Your love,
Your sweetness —
reclining next to You,
my Lord,
held in this moment,
this gift.

There is no past.
There is no future.
I have forgotten all my pain,
my fear,
my desires.

Only this —
Your body,
Your blood,
given freely,
for me.

Praying I am not Judas,
I consent.

I surrender.

Contemplatio:
What would it mean for you to fully consent to God’s gift of rest — not as spiritual discipline, but as an act of love and trust in the One who made the sabbath for you?
