Beyond Oneness: When Divine Grace Draws Us Into Wholeness (Lectio Divina)

“Divine light stuns the ego into silence, drawing one beyond oneness into the mystery of the whole.”
~Ilia Delio

Reflection:
There are moments in the spiritual life when the light of God does not comfort us so much as undo us. It breaks through the noise, the striving, the self-importance, and leaves the ego with nothing to say. In that holy silence, something deeper begins to awaken. We realize that the journey is not about becoming more “spiritual,” but about being gently drawn beyond the narrow confines of the self into the vastness of God.

The mystics knew this well. As St. John of the Cross says in The Ascent of Mount Carmel, “To come to be all, desire to be nothing.” (Book I, Ch 13). In the presence of divine light, the illusions we cling to begin to fall away. We stop trying to manage God, define God, or contain God within our understanding. The soul grows quiet not because it has found all the answers, but because it has finally encountered something too real, too immense for words.

And in that silence, there is a strange freedom. Our identity, our desires, and our fears are no longer the central fact of our lives. We are no longer striving, nor performing. We are simply being drawn into the mystery of the whole. As the psalmist says, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). In these graced moments of wholeness, the ego loosens its grip, and the heart begins to awaken to a love that is larger than identity, beyond separateness, and deeper than oneness itself.

Question for Meditation:
Where in my life might God be inviting me into a deeper silence beyond my need to understand or control?
