Love and Perseverence: Christly Friendship vs Worldly Friendship (Lectio Divina)

“Christ’s friends are not loved by all, but they sincerely love all. The friends of this world are not loved by all, but neither do they love all. Christ’s friends persevere in their love right to the end. The friends of this world persevere only so long as they don’t find themselves in disagreement over worldly matters.”
~Saint Maximus the Confessor

Reflection:
In the wisdom of Saint Maximus the Confessor we hear something that sounds almost like a paradox: the friends of Christ are not universally beloved, yet they genuinely love all. The world offers affection that is transactional and conditional — held only so long as interests align, opinions match, or comforts persist. But the love Christ calls us into runs deeper than convenience or popularity. It is a love forged in self-emptying, in patience that endures misunderstanding, and in commitment that outlives agreement.

On the path of faith, love is not first measured by how many embrace us, but by how faithfully we embrace others — even those who do not return our affection. This is not sentimental love, but the hard work of keeping our hearts tethered to Christ’s own heart in every season of rejection or discord. In that cruciform love we discover that God’s love does not shrink from conflict but transforms it, inviting us to see every soul as dignity-bearing and beloved, even when the world turns away. True discipleship does not gather applause; it gathers hearts in patience, mercy, and steadfast peace. This is the love that perseveres to the end because it reflects the One who first loved us without condition.

Question for meditation:
Where in your life are you clinging to conditional love rather than the steadfast love Christ invites you to embody?
