The appetites
of worldly desire
a bottomless pit
of unquenchable fire
into which
we cast our souls
seeking satisfaction
meaning and fulfillment
from that which
can only offer
emptiness
grief and despair
hardening our hearts
consuming our minds
with shadows
our mouths
filled with ash
a bitter drink
and stale bread
oh Lord when will we learn
to desire only you
