Reflection:
St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the Little Flower, understood something profound about God’s expectations that the world often overlooks. In her “Little Way,” she teaches that Jesus does not wait for us to achieve heroic sanctity or perform magnificent works before drawing close to us. Instead, He delights in our simple surrender and heartfelt gratitude. This is a radical departure from the busy striving that often marks religious life, where we exhaust ourselves trying to prove our worthiness. Like the Blessed Mother who said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word,” we are invited to a posture of humble receptivity. Mary did not perform great deeds to earn God’s favor; she simply said yes with an open heart. Scripture echoes this truth when Paul reminds us that we are saved by grace through faith, not by works. The desert fathers and mothers knew this deep in their bones, living lives stripped down to prayer and presence. St. John of the Cross writes of the soul emptying itself so God can fill it completely. Jesus Himself says His yoke is easy and His burden is light. What God desires from us is not exhausting performance but willing surrender, not grand achievements but grateful hearts that recognize every breath as gift.

In what areas of my life am I striving to earn God’s love through great actions, when He simply invites me to surrender and be grateful?
