Lectio Divina: Why Is Prayer The First Step Towards Transforming A Broken World?

“To clasp the hands in prayer is the beginning of an uprising against the disorder of the world.”
~ Karl Barth

Reflection: Swiss theologian Karl Barth challenges our modern understanding of what it means to revolt against the brokenness in the world, by suggesting that prayer is the primary posture of resistance. Rather than reflexively fighting disorder with disorder, violence with violence, or hatred with hatred, Barth urges us to seek first, through prayerful communion with God, inner order, inner peace, and inner collectedness such that we are then capable of bringing these attributes into our actions. In this way, rather than an act of passivity, prayer is seen as a proactive stance against the world’s tendencies toward disorder, violence, and hatred, not by denying these attributes in ourselves, but by seeking the grace that transcends them, aligning our thoughts and actions with the will of the one true God who is love. Like King David, Barth is urging us, before we act out against the world, to inquire of the Lord, for, as Paul says to the Romans, “If God is for us, who can be against us (8:31)?”

~Robert Van Valkenburgh

Question for Meditation: In what area of brokenness in your life or community is God calling you to begin an uprising through prayer and faithful action?

Scripture for further reflection: “Pray without ceasing.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (ESV)
