Grappling With Divinity

What greater prayer than this
kneeling beside the bed
hands folded
head bowed
this child of God on my back
whispering in my ear
so innocently
so sincerely
so expectantly
say the words daddy
say the words
how can I refuse this prayer
how can I let it go unheard
unanswered
this is faith embodied
God’s promise fulfilled
my heart overflowing with love
with gratitude
with the deep ache of humility
the words spill forth from my lips
baptized by tears of joy
