I hoped to find God
on the mountain top
where the sun shines down
on the trees below
where the air is crisp and clean
where birds are free
and even clouds dare not go
and while he may be found there
that is not where we first met
we met in the gutter
amongst the drunks
liars and thieves
in church basements
and upon cold city steps
seeking salvation
with junkies and beggars
sipping coffee and smoking cigarettes
no I did not
climb a mountain
to find God
though that too
is where he may dwell
God found me
at my bottom
He reached down
grabbed my hand
and pulled me out of hell
~Robert Van Valkenburgh
Reflection:
Where in your own life has God met you unexpectedly in a place of struggle or need?
Scripture:
“He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire; He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.” — Psalm 40:2
